Purpose: Jump Start Summer Academy is a 3 week summer opportunity for incoming METCO students and current LPS peers to engage in fun, hands-on academic activities related to literacy, math, and social emotional learning that will better prepare all students for the upcoming school year. This Academy is not intended to supplant the Extended School Year (ESY) summer programming organized through the Special Education department.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

Jump Start staff will design and implement fun, engaging, hands-on, developmentally appropriate academic activities in math, literacy, and social emotional learning that will move student learning forward and help prepare all students to enter school in the Fall with excitement and confidence. Learning activities can be interdisciplinary, can incorporate science and social studies, can encourage learning through play, experiential learning, incorporate cross-grade peers, student voice and agency, etc.  The summer learning environment should be joyful; students should be working on skills and standards that will help them start the next school year off strong.

Teachers will provide in person daily instruction in math, ELA, and other subjects to students in grades K – 5, in class sizes of about 12-16 students.  Teachers are expected to plan collaboratively with colleagues and Math and Literacy Specialists and will be provided time prior to the start of the program, and during the program day, for planning.

Art, Music, PE, and Library teachers will participate for 1 day, serving all students, providing fun, active special lessons.  Lessons could include SEL skill building and/or academic curriculum tie-ins as appropriate.  Math and Literacy specialists will support teachers in planning academic instruction, and will lead small group lessons supporting the classroom teachers.
